Biography
Lynn Manos
The daughter of an architect and a mother who loved and practiced music, I was drawing on the walls by the time I was 5 years old. By the fifth grade, I drew a picture of George Washington for the entry of my school and in high school I took part in every art project imaginable. I went on to study commercial art and fashion illustration in college and worked as a fashion illustrator for several years, before going into teaching. I discovered printmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute and years of printmaking has led me to painting in oils and pastels as well as making monotypes (a single original print created by painting with inks onto a non-absorbent surface such as Plexiglas).
A strong influence on my approach to art stemmed from working with Christo and Jeane-Claude for 14 years on projects including “Wrapped Walkways” in Kansas City,” “Surrounded Islands” in Miami, and “The Umbrellas” in California and Japan. At one time I was struggling with the problem of how to balance form and content. What are you going to say and how are you going to say it? I soon realized that Christo picked a subject that interested him and then approached it from all angles until he exhausted his curiosity. I started working in series and have done so ever since.
The original inspiration for the water series came from my sailing and life guarding experiences. I jointly kept a sailboat at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri for 25 years, sailing there and in the Caribbean. My search for colorful wooden boats to paint has taken me to California, the Caribbean, Italy and Greece. I am particularly fond of Venice, because all transportation is on foot or by boat. Currently I am working on the Aegean Dinghies and Aegean Sea Series. The research was done on Skopelos, Greece in September 2006 and May 2008 during printmaking residencies at Skopart, the nonprofit Skopelos Foundation for the Arts. Additional research came from Hydra, Greece.
In sum, my work reflects my life’s experiences and my love of line, color, water, and boats.
