The Print Council of America defines an original or fine art print as a multiple original. But these prints are all monotypes, so what is a monotype? A monotype is a single unique print made from a metal or glass plate on which has been painted an image in ink. The image is transferred from the plate onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together, using a printing press. These monotypes are printed on white Rives BFK 100% rag paper. Rives BFK is a 100% cotton, acid free paper that is made in France.
These drawings are pastel on Rives BFK 100% rag paper painted with marble dust and gesso. Marble Dust is calcium carbonate. When painted on BFK paper, marble dust mixed with gesso creates an interesting textural surface for pastel drawing. It can be scrubbed with a damp cloth, erased with a pearl or kneaded eraser, and generally abused to create different textures..
